cold cover letters?

I momentarily posted my cover letter for critique, but have since changed my mind. I had a moment yesterday where I thought I might get a call about a job, but it passed. Does anyone have any suggestions for sending in cold cover letters? I can't figure out how to start one beyond, "I know you didn't ask, but I would be a great employee if you hired me." It doesn't work so well. I don't know what to say. Ack. Nobody wants me.
