please sir, give me a job
Searching for a job is a singularly frustrating experience. I just got a rejection letter for a position that I interviewed for a couple of weeks ago. Not only did they completely ignore me when I asked them whether I was still being considered, but then over a week after the date they said that they would make a decision, they send me a generic form letter. By this time, I already knew they wouldn't hire me, but it would have been nice if they could have let me know sooner that they didn't want me, so I could have stopped worrying about it. I mean, she had probably already decided against me within a day or two, if not sooner. If they would just give me an inkling of an idea why they rejected me, then perhaps I would know what to do for my next interview. But nothing. I was sooo qualified for this job too, so it makes it all the worse.
I am pretty sure that people are put off by how well I did in school and my higher degree, because they think that I will just leave after six months for something better. (I have news for them: there is nothing better.) Regardless, I decided to "dumb down" my resume by taking off one of my college majors. Really all an undergraduate foriegn language major consists of is learning the actual language anyway. But since I also got a master's in that language, it looked like the language itself was a much greater focus of my studies than it ever was (I had always been interested in literature, not the language in and of itself. I never really wanted to teach language classes and I started my masters thinking that a strong national background would help me get into a comp lit phd program). Anyway, now it looks like I just got my degree in English, which hopefully will be more appealing to the people that I want to give me a writing/editorial/admin job. Lets hope.
