Quittin' Time!
I quit my job yesterday. My manager came and told me that I was no longer allowed to read, check my email or use the internet for personal reasons. As she told me, it is a place of business, and I have two 15 minute breaks and my lunch hour for personal things, like reading. In her mind, it is more productive to stare at the wall, because that way we can all pretend that nobody else knows that I don't have anything to do. She said she could always give me more to do if I had nothing else, but it isn't really true, not only because she doesn't actually do anything and therefore has nothing to delegate, but also since I need to sit by the phone and greet people when they come in (ie, my actual job), and thus I am very limited as to the sorts of boring office crap I can do--you know, I can't exactly do her filing. Anyways, to punctuate this idea of hers, she hands me a binder and some papers, then tells me to punch holes in the paper, make a divider with "HR" written on it, put it in the front of the binder and give it back to her. I don't know how long she thought such a "project" would take, but there was "no rush" and I had until Friday.
You know, I couldn't even process it when she said I couldn't read at the desk. She took away the only thing that made it bearable. It really is quite unreasonable, seeing as I am capable of using many other parts of my brain while waiting for the phone to ring as I sit in a room by myself. So I quit. I handed the binder back to her after lunch and said it would be my last week. Since it will only cause more work for my co-worker who I actually like, I said I would give the notice requested in my contract, so my last day will be on Wednesday. In the meantime, I told some people I was leaving, so there is a bit of gossip flying around (really, what will she do, fire me a day early?) Had I realized that I would sit around for another week, I may have waited, but, that's life. I feel much better already and had an interview this afternoon for a better job, so all is good. I'm just going to go back to temping for a while, it was less boring anyways.
