I've made up my mind

I've decided to go back to Davis. Once again, its combination of nice school, nice location and nice people have won me over. The thing that finally cinched it for me: I'm looking forward to TAing lit classes, but I would be mildly dreading teaching language classes. Seeing as it will be my job for the next few years, I realized I'd rather go for the one I think I will like more. I'll try to teach language eventually because it would be good experience, but the literature part of the degree was always the part that I liked the most. Frankly, they were so weird about funding that would constantly worry that it would fall through. Secondly, part of the reason for going to LA would be that the research they are doing is similar to what I was working on in Montreal. Then I remembered I never was quite happy with that research, since experimental writers are inherently frustrating, so perhaps it should be less of an issue. Also, lest I forget, I was assigned that topic. It would be easier to continue on what I was already doing, but efficiency isn't really the best reason to choose a program. I'll still do 20th C, but it needn't be on someone crazy. Plus, if I go there, I'm not far from Paddy, or Di, and the familiarity should make it easier to settle back into my work. Oh yeah, the grad housing in LA was a total dump. The only thing that we saw that was cool were the canals in Venice Beach.

I'm really looking forward to fall. I'm going to have a more interesting job, be around more interesting people, read lots of books and get to sleep in without feeling like a huge loser. I know few people's finances improve upon going to grad school, but mine will. As I remembered yesterday, all kinds of brilliant people were disastrous failures in the business world. I now can count myself among them. If all goes to plan (which it never does, but whatever) I should have a pretty nice life there. Also if anyone teases me about going back (which, they will) all I'm going to do is ask them if they ever lived in Canada or San Jose, because if they haven't, they really shouldn't judge.
